In the early hours of June 1, 1921, the Tulsa Race Massacre began as white rioters looted and burned Tulsa’s Greenwood District — an affluent African American community referred to as “Black Wall Street.” Initial reports listed 36 deaths in the 24 hours of violence, but historians now believe as many as 300 may have died.
