Now that Donald Trump has made a mess of things, many Republicans are running away from him.
Although not quite as fast as they probably should or even would like.
The Republican leadership, stuck between a rock and a hard place, remains supportive. At least in as few words as possible.
But Trump and his racist movement have always had a home among the Repugs for at least since Barry Goldwater ran for President in 1964.
I would say that Goldwater was the originator of the most recent version of the Southern Strategy that was further solidified by the defection of George Wallace Democrats in 1968. Ronald Reagan’s 1980 presidential campaign symbolically began in Philadelphia, Mississippi, just seven miles from where Civil Rights workers Andrew Goodman, James Chaney and Michael Schwerner were murdered in the summer of 1964.
Reagan launched is presidential campaign with a Trumpian call for State’s Rights.
The development of the Southern Strategy from Goldwater to Wallace to Reagan turned the Dixiecrat South from Democratic to Republican and provided short-term electoral gains for the Repugs.
It also created the conditions for it’s current implosion.
And the rise of Donald Trump as the Repubs national – and its natural – standard bearer.
