BY ASKING PUBLIC TO DEVELOP MEANINGLESS NICKNAME FOR NEW SCHOOL DISTRICT, EMERGENCY MANAGER PROVES YET AGAIN THAT HE IS OUT OF TOUCH

Detroit Schools Emergency Manager Steve Rhodes is asking the public to participate in developing an informal nickname for the new school district. Give me a break.
State law prescribes the legal name of the new school district. Pursuant to Section 381(3) of Public Act 192 of 2016, the name of the new district must include the words “Detroit” and “school”; it must also include the word “community,” the word “district,” or both. This doesn’t leave much room for creative nomenclature.
The new district already has an official name: “Detroit Public Schools Community District” or “DPSCD.” So why does it need a nickname? Your guess is as good as mine.
