Afghan witnesses claimed that U.S. soldiers dug bullets out of a dead woman’s body to cover up their crime. A newly released Pentagon investigation found that soldiers did nothing wrong.
“These special forces, with the long beards, did cruel, criminal things,” Hajji Sharabuddin told Jeremy Scahill. “They destroyed my family.”
After U.S. special operations forces in Afghanistan attacked a family celebrating the naming of a baby boy, killing seven people, including three women, the Pentagon initially claimed the women were victims of an honor killing. Survivors charged they had seen soldiers digging bullets from the bodies of the women to cover up their crime. Now, five years after Scahill filed a Freedom of Information Act request in connection with the killings, the Pentagon has released a heavily redacted version of its investigation that raises more questions than it answers.
