In some parts of Florida, third grade children are being told they must repeat third grade– even though their report cards are stellar. Why? Because nothing is more important than those damned BS Tests.
Contrary to popular belief, Senate Bill 710 would have unprecedented effects statewide—including in financially sound school districts without emergency managers, far from Detroit. It would allow any school district in Michigan to stop operating schools of its own and to contract away the function of educating pupils.
This amendment is anything but minor or harmless. If SB 710 is enacted as written, Michigan law will allow any public school district to contract away its core educational functions for the first time in history. And yes, the amendment would allow a board of education to turn over the education of all pupils to one or more charters. Remember Muskegon Heights and its wonderful experience with Mosaica? This amendment would authorize any school board in the state to enter into a district-wide contract with a charter company, even in an affluent district that is financially sound and not subject to emergency management.
This amendment would apply statewide, to all 540 traditional public school districts in Michigan. So ask yourself this question: Why would the MEA be supporting a bill with such a provision? Probably because the MEA—like AFT Michigan—does not understand the principles of statutory construction, and has no idea what the amendment would really mean.

The Golden State: According to Math
Warmest greetings, my friends! Today, I’m going to drop some very important numbers to prepare you for…
The Battle of California!
Of course, you all know — as well as I — that the California primary has the power to make or break each of the candidates for democratic nominee.
With a stunning 475 pledged delegates at stake, the fight for the Golden State will be a battle for the heart of our democracy — its results shall blare & resound like roaring thunder in the teleprompters of every TV station in the nation and they shall flash with the brightness of ten-thousand suns on the screens of millions of Facebook & Twitter feeds.
Verily, on that day, some shall rejoice, while others shall cast their faces down & gnash their teeth!
