State sets up water stations at Flint fire stations

LANSING — The State of Michigan said Saturday it has partnered with local officials to set up depots at five Flint fire stations where city residents can pick up free bottled water, filters and other items to address the crisis related to lead contamination of the city’s drinking water supply.

“The water resource sites serve as a one-stop location where residents can pick up all of the resources they need to ensure their drinking water is safe, including bottled water, water filters, replacement cartridges and water testing kits,” said Capt. Chris Kelenske, deputy state director of emergency management and homeland security and commander of the Michigan State Police emergency management and homeland security division.

The sites will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., daily, at the following fire station locations: 310 E. 5th St.; 1525 Martin Luther King Ave.; 3402 Western Road; 716 W. Pierson Road; and 202 E. Atherton Road.

Water filters and replacement cartridges continue to be available during those times at the following locations: the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services offices at 125 E. Union St. and 4809 Clio Road; the Genesee County Community Action Resource Department offices at 4809 Clio Road and 2727 Lippincott, and Flint City Hall at 1101 S. Saginaw St.

Residents who need transportation or any other assistance can call 211.

Residents are urged to use filtered water for drinking, food preparation, brushing teeth and for pets. Unfiltered water may be used for bathing and cleaning.

In addition to the water resource sites, home water testing kits are available at Flint City Hall, the Flint Water Treatment Plant or Flint Fire Department locations, the Michigan State Police said.
